芭蕾舞剧《火鸟》完成于1910年4月。6月25日，在巴黎歌剧院首演。舞剧故事大意是Ivan王子打猎时擒获了一只羽毛金光闪闪、象火焰一样美丽的大鸟。火鸟恳求王子不要杀她，并给了王子一支羽毛，告诉王子今后在遇到了困难的时候，只要对着羽毛呼唤，她就会立即前来相助。王子于是放了火鸟。后来他真的遇到了困难，当他想解救一个被魔王卡茨施了魔法、囚禁在城、堡中的公主时，因势单力薄，不幸被魔王捉住。紧急中他想到了火鸟的许诺，拿出那根金羽毛呼唤起来。果然，火鸟立即出现了，他们齐心协力，砸碎了一个巨大的蛋，使魔王丧失了他的魔力，最后他们救出了公主。
这部组曲共分七段：
一、引子：勾勒一幅暮色苍茫的图景。荒野中，隐约可见一座城堡及花园，空中飘浮着不祥的云彩，画面阴森恐怖。
二、火鸟之舞：激烈。
三、火鸟变奏：金光闪闪。
四、公主之舞：温柔抒情。
五、魔王卡茨之舞：怪诞恐怖。不协和音刻划出魔鬼卡茨及其同伙粗野狂暴的嘴脸。
六、催眠曲：火鸟催眠妖魔，神秘朦胧。
七、终曲：胜利欢歌。
A Vivid Imagination

Firebird (original story)
A fabulous bird, decribed as having eyes that sparkled like Crystal and feathers of gold that shone as bright as day itself. Owned by Tsar Dalmat, the bird used to steal the golden apples that grew in the garden of Tsar Vyslav Andronovich. He set his three sons, Dmitrii, Vasilii and Ivan, the task of locating the obtaining the bird for him. Ivan succeeded, but his brothers ambushed and killed him, claiming that they had completed the quest when they presented the bird to their father. Their false claim was exposed when Ivan was restored to life thanks to the Water of life and death, which was sprinkled on him by the shape-changing wolf that had been helping him. The Firebird remained in the ownership of Vyslav Andronovich, for Dalmat had given the bird to Ivan after the completion of a task that he had set the young man, while Dmitrii and Vasilii were thrown into their father's deepest dungeon for their treachery.
