整部戏让我感受最强烈的是Johnny Depp的眼睛和精湛的演技。看着故事的主人公John Milmot，the Earl of Rochester，一个无神论者，一个双性恋，一个很有智慧和才华的诗人，一个愤世嫉俗到极点的青年最后几年中的自我毁灭，很悲，很黑色，很烟熏，很烛光。如果没有Johnny Depp，估计这部戏很难看下去。最吸引我的是片头的独白，太精彩了，无论是用词还是拍摄上的艺术处理。就像一个黑洞把你吸进去，到一个人的灵魂深处游荡。
对白很witty，两位女演员在情感上的把握也相当到位。看完这部片，人人都会为John Milmot感到惋惜。然而路是他自己选的，命运是他自己挑的。不是每个有才华的人都有适当的性格去作出伟大的事情。
这是部很特别的电影，带有浓重英国戏剧的味道。不足之处，事件背景交待不清，很多loose ends，让人没有头绪。[参见有关John Milmot的文章] 一般人不会喜欢，所以票房不好。警告读者，如果不是像我那么爱Johnny Depp，最好不要看这部。
The prologue:

It is a deal of trouble for you and you are better off watching and drawing your conclusions from a distance than you would be if I got my tarse up your petticoats. Gentlemen. Do not despair, I am up for that as well. And the same warning applies.
Still your cheesy erections till I have had my say. But later when you shag – and later you will shag, I shall expect it of you and I will know if you have let me down – I wish you to shag with my homnuncular image rattling in your gonads. Feel how it was for me, how it is for me and ponder. ‘Was that shudder the same shudder he sensed? Did he know something more profound? Or is there some wall of wretchedness that we all batter with our heads at that shining , livelong moment.’ That is it. That is my prologue, nothing in rhyme, no protestations of modesty, you were not expecting that I hope. I am John Wilmot, Second Earl of Rochester and I do not want you to like me".
