As usual, this is my Monday night movie. The story, as I assumed, is based on the true childhood experience of the director himself in the mid of 1980's, since it feels very personal. It's about a dysfunctional New York family falling apart due to the separate of the parents. It is more of a comedy, though. I really enjoy the conversations. (8/10)
Personally, I have friends who are from a divorced family. I thought I could imagine and understand the pains they had, but now I doubted. These kids at early ages are shocked and confused, being back and forth. It's difficult for them to see it through. You always want to believe that you are from a perfectly happy family. But when you found out the truth, it takes time to swallow it.
The title, the squid and the whale, refers to prized displays at the American Museum of Natural History. I guess I will pay a visit to the museum on my trip to the Big Apple.
